Ignite Journalism is recruiting for its inaugural class! Find everything you need to know here.
What is Ignite Journalism?
Ignite Journalism is a new program to create more journalism opportunities for San Diego County teens.
Who can join?
11th and 12th graders across San Diego County whose high school doesn’t offer journalism classes or clubs. If you are a 9th or 10th grader eager to join and a strong writer, reach out and let’s talk about if you could be a good early fit for the program.
How much does it cost?
Ignite Journalism is free for students to participate in.
What will students actually do?
There are three main parts to Ignite Journalism’s program.
- Journalism education: Students will learn the fundamentals of journalism. How to tell a compelling story, the nuts and bolts of interviewing people, media ethics, and much more!
- Producing an online media outlet: Students will be supported in creating a youth-focused online media outlet. They will produce written stories and develop their digital storytelling skills.
- Media career exploration: We will have regular guest speakers across communications professions so students can get a sense of what jobs are out there for good story tellers, from writing, editing, public relations, advertising and beyond.
What is the time commitment?
The 2021-2022 program will run from September through May. Students will meet for approximately one hour per week and be expected to write one story each month.
When do we meet?
The great part about being part of the inaugural class is that you will get to help decide this! Once students have applied, we will ask if they prefer to meet after school or on Saturday mornings and choose what works best for the most amount of people.
Where do we meet?
The 2021-2022 program will take place primarily online with live zoom sessions. We will also meet a couple of times in person throughout the year so we can get to know each other better. We will choose a central location to be convenient for students around the county.
What if I’m not a great writer?
That’s okay! If you are interested in storytelling and want to develop your skills, please apply!
Sounds great! How do I apply?
We can’t wait to hear from you! You can find all of the application information here. The deadline is Thursday, September 30, 2021.
